A wise educator once said, “Think left and think right and think low and think high. Oh, the thinks you can think up if only you try!”. If you think this quote is from Dr. Seuss, you are right.
Encouraging young minds to think up “thinks” is the best method to educate and motivate the future thinkers and doers. Startup is defined as the act or fact of starting something; a setting in motion. We are setting in motion tools and processes to enable students to gain an education as a result, sometimes inadvertently, of pursuing their ideas. StartupWonder fosters kids and teen entrepreneurship and leadership in order to empower students with diverse backgrounds, talents and gifts to participate in building the new economy and creating skills that are presently unimaginable. A secure future is not guaranteed for all graduates, not even for graduates of STEM fields. The current education system is educating our children for a job market of today or near future. Today’s student in kindergarten will likely not enter the workforce in another decade and a half. If technology continue to grow according to Moore’s law with an exponential growth, then in a decade and half a lot can change in society and job market.
We don’t know, in future, what talent or X-factor characteristics college admission officers or employers will value above all. What we do know is problem solving, critical thinking and good communication skills will always be in demand.
The future belongs to youth and they must have the opportunity to take responsibility for and to participate in their own education. Our philosophy is further strengthened by the rise of “create your own major” programs being offered by an increasing number of higher education institutions. So, let “Kids build a Summer startup”. Today’s k12 student will increasingly be able to earn college credit or a job interview based on the projects they start and the “thinks they think up”.
StartupWonder provides Bay Area Summer Camps in Technology, STEM, Coding and Business for kids and children in grades 2-12. StartupWonder was founded to encourage youth to practice their creativity in real life problems and determine viability of those creative solutions. We teach STEM and computer coding or programming in summer camp so students can invent a product or solution, learn to write code and design computer games or Apps. Student will then create a business plan to productize their solutions. Finally, they have to pitch their startup idea in the Convention contest where they get feedback and winners receive awards. Any child can Start Wonder!
